Spain, a country where you don’t need a spin dryer, and your sheets smell fresh without the aid of softeners or ozone killing chemicals. You wash them and hang them on a washing line to be dried by the sun and aired by the breeze. Where your food is fresh. You go to a market where there may be a touch of dirt on your vegetables, because it was in the ground yesterday and not transported from god knows where and stored in a dark warehouse for 6 months ready to rot within 48 hours of getting it home. Where there are no rubbish collections. You are expected to divide your waste and take it to the nearest waste collection bins, of which there are many within close proximity to your house. I have 3 within 200 metres of where I live. Be irresponsible and they might fine you. Perfectly acceptable as far as I’m concerned. The streets are cleaned every day and you can go out without walking on mountains of chewing gum and cigarette butts. Where children can go out and play football in the town square. Ride their bicycles, shout and run about. Where it’s always clean, and nobody sues anyone if their kid falls over. When it’s a bank holiday (of which there are many) the councils put on events for all ages so the people can celebrate the meaning of life and family together. The children are safe, their families are close and you won’t be frowned upon for having a glass of wine with your kids around. I never buy bread that is more than 6 hours old, and when I go to buy it I’m said hello to by at least 2 people I’ve never met before. I can help an old lady with her shopping without her recoiling in fear that I’m going to mug her. In fact, despite the fact that I’m a foreigner, she’ll go out of her way to make me feel her gratitude. So regardless of the fact I’m an alien here, I’ve never felt more at home. Sound like the country your parents grew up in. xx

Xabia Port (Xabia is the name for Javea in the local Valenciano language - pronounced 'Shabia') has private grounds, with little footpaths, courtyards and gardens adorned with plants, trees and shrubs, giving the place a delightfully intimate character. Close by are the harbour, the fishermen's church, the Club Nautico, fish market, and waterfront with good restaurants, cafés, bars and other attractions, mostly open year-round. View From The Top Of Penon de Ifach Calpe

The town's most famous and distinguishing feature is its mighty Peñon de Ifach - the huge rock which rises 332 metres out of the Mediterranean, reminiscent of the Rock of Gibraltar. The Peñon was declared a nature reserve in 1987 and now provides a safe haven for a variety of birds and unusual flora and fauna. For the energetic, a hike to the top of the Peñon de Ifach is a memorable experience - but definitely not one to be contemplated by the elderly, disabled, or those prone to vertigo! The summit can be reached by means of a tunnel that was built in 1919 and leads to the northeastern side of the rock. The climb up was relatively easy up to this point, but the rocks in the tunnel were extremely slick. There were ropes on both sides of the tunnel to help you cross this area more safely. At the exit, there was a small vantage point towards the west. The itinerary from here becomes much more hazardous, and we chose to turn around and head back. People less well-equipped, i.e., sandals instead of hiking boots, proceeded on – we wished them well. The views from all points along the walk were spectacular. More from this article...

Iceland Volcano Flight Disruption UK

It seems, as of 4pm Uk time, that most flight cancellations, due to the Iceland volcano, are too and from Scotland.

Update: Now the ash cloud is due to cover the whole of the UK by Friday, Oh Heck! We will have to wait and see!!!

Update 26th May: Looks like it was all a storm in a teacup, the ash cloud that was going to ruin holiday flights from the UK this weekend has dissipated.

The Met Office today confirmed that the volcanic ash cloud posed no threat to families planning a getaway over the bank holiday weekend.

A spokesman said the situation was 'improving' with a much reduced concentration of ash drifting over the UK at 35,000-55,000 feet.

The Civil Aviation Authority confirmed no flights from the UK would be disrupted at the weekend.

The Iceland volcano eruption is starting to cause flight cancellations in Scotland and the ash cloud is heading south across the UK. The following info was issued by the Association of British Insurers...

• Contact your airline for the latest information about travel arrangements. If your flight is cancelled airlines should offer you either a full refund or an alternative flight. EU-based airlines are required to offer you accommodation and meals if you are delayed in getting home to the UK.
• If your flight is cancelled and you do not travel, insurers will refund your premium if you took out single trip travel insurance. If you arrange an alternative flight at a later date, your travel insurer should be able to change your policy to cover this.
• Following the ash cloud disruption in April 2010, it has been possible to buy travel insurance which specifically covers cancellation, delay and curtailment due to ash cloud disruption. Check your policy for the terms and conditions.
• Check your travel insurance policy for any cover that may be available. While volcanic ash is not a specific risk in most policies, some may cover delay and any subsequent abandonment. Your travel insurer can advise.
• Payment for any delay, whether outward or return, is usually a fixed sum for a specified period up to a maximum amount. Some policies may pay a lump sum if the delay is over a certain time (typically 24 hours), and you are forced to abandon your trip.
• Where your travel policy covers ash disruption then you will be covered for this latest eruption, provided you took the policy out before this latest eruption could have been reasonably foreseen. Check with your insurer on this and any initial periods when cover may be limited.
• ABI member travel insurers will provide information for customers on their websites wherever possible. Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, said: "Travel insurance is designed to work alongside, and not duplicate, any compensation you are entitled to from your airline or tour operator.

From the battered, deep brick-red metal sheeting of the temporary plaza de toros, plonked on a piece of wasteland beside the railway station at the dog-end of Lebrijas, itself an Andalucian town of almost nil distinction, comes a roll of drums and a weedy blast on trumpet and saxophone as the town band announces the arrival into the bullring of that day's matadors, bandaleros and sword handlers as they make their triumphant march across the spotless pale golden sand. On the far right a tall slim chap with ginger-ish hair, dressed in the 'traje corto', the tight fitting black bolero suit used for minor bullfights, doffs his hat and salutes the crowd.

Even from the top ranks of the rickety benches he sticks out from the rest of the field - hardly surprising, he's Frank Evans, Britain's only bullfighter. But whether it's hick-town Andalucia or the soaring heights of Las Ventas in Madrid, Spain's most famous bullring, when that big, black temper on the hoof makes a run at you you'd better be ready to stand your ground - and Frank Evans has done it more times than any other non-Latin bullfighter in the history of the spectacle.

The number of British matadors who have stood in front of a bull can be counted on three fingers. The first was the ex-public schoolboy, Vincent Hitchcock who fought during the 1950's. During the '60's Henry Higgins had a brief moment of fame, but none have had the staying power of Salford's Frank Evans, who killed his first bull at the age of seventeen in 1966 and, except for a period in the 70's, has worn the sparkling suite of lights every year since... Its beautiful day in the Costa Blanca with temperatures arround the 25º mark, blue skies and glorious sunshine.

Took a short trip to Jalon (pronounced Halon) to go to the Saturday Rastro a great place to find all sorts of interesting stuff, a lot of it junk but there are often useful items to be had at a knock down price. You can also stock up on home grown Jalon wine in the Bodega.

The journey take you through the Jalon Valley which is in full color with the almond blossom, grape vines and orange trees.

When you are done with the market there are bars and cafe's next to the market to get some food and drink and a well earned rest.

If you are out this way, take time to visit Jalon, you wont be sorry.
